New funding from Business Finland enables SMEs to invest in research, development and innovation

News

VTT helps companies solve technical problems, develop new innovations and scale their operations. With Business Finland's new funding, companies can utilise the expertise of VTT's researchers and experts, research and pilot infrastructures, the latest technologies, IPR rights and licensing.

Small and medium-sized enterprises are important employers and export operators. One of the objectives of the Government Programme is to strengthen the cornerstone of the economy and exports through measures aimed at doubling the number of growth-oriented, medium-sized companies led by entrepreneurs by 2030. The new Business Finland funding application process will provide new companies the opportunity to access research cooperation to support this goal. There are no sectoral or thematic restrictions on the funding.

‘Through research cooperation, smaller companies can speed up the development of their business. Innovation efforts are also easier to implement in an expert group than alone. Companies are able to expand their knowledge and explore the possibilities of the latest technologies for their own activities. This will certainly generate new ideas and solutions," says Laura Juvonen, VTT’s Senior Vice President for Strategy.

This call for applications requires at least three companies to participate in the project, and funding is granted for a Co-Research project implemented by an individual research organisation or jointly by several research organisations.

Research carried out in projects is planned in a manner that will support the competitiveness of companies in the long term and serve as a basis for further development. Planning the utilisation of the results is an important part of the research project. The companies will have the most extensive access possible to the research results. The participating companies will have a privilege to negotiate the utilisation of protected results (IPRs).

The application period will close on 29 November 2024 and Business Finland's funding decisions will be announced in early 2025. The following VTT experts can provide more information on cooperation opportunities with VTT and the planning of research projects for the application process:
