Electric vehicles
We help the manufacturing industry to utilise the smart, efficient and eco-friendly electric vehicle systems and transportation applications of the future. We also help public transport operators to implement new technology. Join us on this journey!
Key facts
In the European Union, road passenger transport is estimated to grow by 16% during 2010–2030 and by 30% during 2010–2050.
European Union lawmakers and member countries reached a deal in 2022 to ban the sale of new gasoline and diesel cars and vans by 2035.
We can help you tackle the electrification revolution with our electric vehicle and vehicle systems expertise.
Emissions and energy consumption of transportation are among the major challenges of our time, and electrification is one of the solutions. We at VTT help both the manufacturing industry and the consumer market to implement smart electric vehicle systems at a fast pace. Our competence builds upon top-level computational and experimental facilities and know-how paired with years of experience in Finland and internationally.
The electric vehicles industry is going through an implementation phase as new technology is being introduced. And the change doesn’t just concern cars, but also buses, trucks, motorcycles, tractors, and excavators – electrification is happening in all vehicle classes. For the last 20 years, the development of electric vehicles has been active, and now, it’s starting to show in the street scene.
The world is well on its way to a more sustainable future.
One of our assets is a state-of-the-art computational toolbox VTT Smart eFleet, which allows us to plan, model, and deploy electric vehicle systems. We also have a world-class battery laboratory that can provide experimental research and support us in our modelling work.
We can make road transportation carbon-free by 2035.
Electric vehicle systems of the future
The automotive industry is experiencing rapid product development. This brings a large number of different technologies to the market. It is necessary to validate and verify that technology. We help customers adopt the most suitable technology and test its functionality, reliability and safety. Vehicle electrification calls for multifaceted expertise.
Taking the internal combustion engine and replacing it with an electrical machine is not a good strategy.
Instead, it is often crucial to start from scratch, first assessing the vehicle's operational profile, deriving from the powertrain concept, and finally the key components, i.e., the battery and electrical machine as well as the drive, transmission, and auxiliary systems. Electrification is a systemic challenge that also requires reliable infrastructure and functioning services. Charging systems are therefore an equally important aspect.
Expertise in charging technologies and interoperability of electric vehicles
When we no longer charge our electric cars at gas stations but in the parking lots of grocery stores, the city view will change little by little. We are living through one of the biggest changes in society in modern times. Change is taking place right now on such a broad front and with such huge volumes that organizations are under pressure to adopt proven technology.
The lack of clear interoperability rules in electric vehicle charging networks prevents various infrastructures from working together as a united, secure, cost-effective, and reliable system. At VTT, we are experts in charging technologies and provide consulting services to select the best charging solution. In our interoperability laboratory, we test electric vehicle charging systems for compatibility and interoperability to ensure that they comply with the latest international standards.

How our electric transportation solutions have helped our customers
Whether your employer is a city, a transportation authority, or a vehicle manufacturer, we can help you. We have proven our expertise in our research projects (ZeEUS). We have also helped public transport operators globally in the transition to carbon-neutral mobility.
We have helped our customers with their electrification actions, e.g. coordinated a European Commission funded H2020 project DRIVEMODE to develop next-generation powertrain technologies. We are currently executing an H2020 project REFLECTIVE, where we develop an L7 class light urban vehicle in collaboration with our partners.
We have a strong track record of collaborating with different cities and projects (such as in ASSURED) to develop and test high-power solutions for full-size, urban, heavy-duty applications.
Helping public transport
VTT has years of experience in helping customers make the right choices. For example, we have helped urban public transport operators in purchasing buses. Being able to make the right choices in public transport is influenced by many things: the geography of the city, where charging stations are placed, different types of charging and so on.
Thanks to our virtual environment, we can test and compare different vehicle combinations with each other virtually, in a geographically correct environment, which gives us information about what kind of vehicles suit the needs of different cities. We test prototypes in a virtual, modelled environment, in our laboratories, and in trial runs. We also do battery testing in our own laboratories at varying temperatures.
The competition is tough and successful organizations are investing in change. We can help make that change possible.
